A good friend of mine shared an interesting story about how he developed a habit:
“When I learned to drive a car at age sixteen in 1960, it was a much different time. Driver’s Ed was not mandatory and safety-belts were not yet standard in every automobile.
“Unlike my two grandchildren (Ben-11 and Luke-7), who have never ridden one-mile without being buckled in, my generation drove blissfully down the highway unfettered by any type of strap around our bodies.
“It is with this background that I relate how buckling up is now as much a part of my driving or riding as turning on windshield-wipers when it rains. Once it became clear to me that not using a safety-belt was ridiculous, I made a conscious decision to wear one each and every time that I get into an automobile.
“I had read that if you do something for thirty days in a row–without fail–a habit will develop.
“I decided to give that advice a whirl.
“And guess what? It worked!
“Faithfully, for thirty days in succession, I reminded myself to buckle up. It has become so much of a habit that today, if I fill my car up and pull forward to go into the store and buy a donut, I unconsciously buckle up that safety-belt for my drive to the curb!”
So how does my friend’s little anecdote relate to you?
Ask yourself this simple but powerful question: What could you be doing differently on a daily basis to become more effective as a producer?
- Who could you be calling on?
- What could you be saying to make yourself more valuable to your customer?
- What system could you put in place to make a task automatic?
- How could your business look different six months from now if you chose to develop a positive habit to help you grow professionally and personally?
Give that issue serious thought and come up with questions and solutions that make sense and are doable.
Then—repeat them for thirty consecutive days. The results will shock and delight you.
